My favourite quote by Quentin.
Well when I started this I thought it would be easy, but as I thought more I realised how hard it was going to be. Quentin had so many brilliant quotes, how was I going to pick just one. In the end after much soul searching I choose -
"Never desire to be anyone's equal."
Why? Because of all his quotes this is the one that has had the most influence in my life.
But I'm afraid I must give three more honourable mention -
"Never keep up with the Joneses, drag them down to your level. It's cheaper."
"Never do for a living anything into which you cannot put part of who you are into what you do."
"Fashion is what you adopt when you don't know who you are."
All three of these have also have a positive influenced on my life.
Favourite quote about Quentin.
Sorry Heather but I'm going to steal your favourite by John Hurt who described him thus -
"as one of the truly great figures of the 20th century....He was a true philosopher and the only philosopher who actually lived his own philosophy .... The soft light of his sunset enriched all our lives."
There simply isn't a better one.
Favourite book by Quentin.
How to Have A Lifestyle
This might not seem at first glance to be a good choice, but I feel that of all his books, it is the one which gives the greatest insight into his philosophy.
Favourite book about Quentin.
I have literally just finished Quentin and Philip by Andrew Barrow.
It is not a very stylist book, somewhat matter of fact and a bit dry in places, but it has a wealth of information about him, much of which is very interesting and enlightening. Andrew Barrow knew both men for decades and it shows. The book alternates chapters, one about Quentin and the next about Philip O'Connor, so you can skip those about Philip if you wish, I did (I actually found after a couple of his chapters that I really didn't like him. I would not have wanted to know him on any level).
Favourite film about Quentin.
Well this has to be The Naked Civil Servant. No contest.
If you want to know who Quentin Crisp was, what he was about, then this is the film to watch. It's miles above Resident Alien. John Hurt is just incredible.
Favourite film with Quentin.
Happy Heights, in which he starred as Malcolm.
Quentin was like 88 when he made this, but you can tell that he and everyone else was having a ball. Yes I know everyone says that Orlando was his best acting performance, but I just enjoyed this film a lot.
However I think it's one of those films that people either love or looth.
