Congratulations on your first newspaper interview. It was very informative and entertaining, certainly calculated to make one want to read the book. I hope it will be the first of many such articles. I can't wait for the publication in October and to have the book in my hands will be a thrill.

How wonderful an experience. Having never met Mr. Crisp, I feel that I have been robbed of a great privilege that life had to offer. Fortunately, with the coming of a digital age, I have thanks to the internet, completely at random, been made aware of one of our worlds more unique products.
Here, we can experience the history of a man with so much life and fortitude, that it shames many of us, by our lack of determination and will to thrive.
Quentin was indeed a wit, and a fellow with an extraordinary ability to make an impression.
May his memory linger for quite a while.

With much appreciation.

Thought you might like to see/read the program from `An Evening with Quentin Crisp` from 1979 (follow link to auction page with photos). I`m parting with the program, ticket and signed Naked Civil Servant book, but NOT my memories of the night. Quentin Crisp changed my life! Thanks for your site!!

I saw "An Englishman in New York" today. I loved the portrayal of Mr. Crisp. I am sorry that I never met him because I believe that he was a very interesting man. I love people who are "their own person"; it is so refreshing.

In 1968 a radio appearance led Quentin Crisp to write his autobiography. It was anything but an instant success, selling only 3500 copies. But, eight years later, the Granada Television adaptation of this book thrust Quentin Crisp into the limelight. His book, his TV programs, his interviews on chat shows and the 2009 production of An Englishman In New York all had some good one liners: "All you have to do if you are on a chat show is to look pleased to be there," he said. "It`s like going to a party. All you have to do is look like you are enjoying yourself and expecting to continue to enjoy yourself." In this prose-poem I will not give you a potted history/biography of Crisp. You can read that in a number of sources. But I will say: I enjoyed that made-for-television film entitled-An Englishman in New York, Quentin. It`s only been out for a year as I write this prose-poem. I must say that I hardly knew you Quentin, busy as I was with 35 years of work as a teacher-tutor, raising three kids....dealing with bipolar disorder and being an active member of the Bahai; Faith for more than fifty years. You were always very much an outsider with decades in bed-sitting rooms letting the dust and dirt rise to fixed positions and with skin white and a greenish tinge. You beat me to your autobiography by 35 years, but you wrote yours about the same time as I wrote mine @ the age of 60: good time, eh Quentin?....You died just as I was settling into my sea-change, my retirement in beautiful Tasmania. I regard it my duty, too, to converse with anyone who calls me, but they only call me on the internet and it is much easier to deal with people whom... you will never ever see......I was impressed with your capacity to see with your own eyes and not the eyes of others and know of your own knowledge & not the knowledge of your neighbour: that was, indeed, a gift to you & us.

He was the writer/producer/star of the play Carved In Stone and he and Leon Acord(who played Quentin Crisp in the first production) were in the process to doing the play again early next year.

Hi, I was checking out your site today- very cool and informative. Your readers might be interested to know that Resident Alien, a film about cult figure Quentin Crisp`s arrival in New York, is now available to download on iTunes. About the film - At age 73, Quentin Crisp moved to the States where he became an Englishman in New York. In this film, director Jonathan Nossiter follows Mr. Crisp about the streets of Manhattan, in and out of fantasy and reality, where he seems very much at home, wearing eye shadow, appearing on a makeshift stage, making and repeating wry observations, and dining with friends. Commentary by notable British celebs such as Sting and John Hurt, as well as demi-stars and wannabe Warhol Superstars who know Mr. Crisp, illuminate the life of this effeminate and eccentric fellow. The portrait that emerges is one of absolute wit and of suffering. I think your site is the perfect place to get the word about something like this out, and everyone on our side would really appreciate your help in spreading the news.
If you would like to post a link to the film and help us spread the word, here it is

So lets all try to spread the word in what ever way we can.

A lovely site, and though in his pre-American days he even claimed he `didn`t hold with abroad` I do think Mr Crisp would have quite enjoyed the idea of being launched into cyberspace! May I suggest that one `project` for either individual or group action in this centenary year might be to spread interest in Crisperanto? `Manners From Heaven` was the first book of his I read, and I always thought his call for good manners which go beyond race, creed, gender, or sexuality was his greatest legacy. Possibly Crisperanto, unlike Marxism,Darwinism or the other `isms`, is a project he started but others might develop in his unavoidable absence.

I have only just discovered Quentin Crisp, and what a discovery!
Before I had known who he was, but thought he was just a famous homosexual.
How wrong I was, he is so so much more.
I wish I had studied him long before this as I know his philosophy and ideas would have helped me through many `long dark years` of my life.
So my advice to whomever runs this site, is never stop, because I`m sure there are thousands of people like me out there who will be the better for knowing about this unique and exceptional human being.

One day Quentin was waiting at a traffic light in New York when a large black man stopped beside him. He was staring so intently at Quentin that he started to get worried. Then the man looked down at him and smiled and said "Well my dear, you`ve got it all on today, haven`t you?"
Well dear, you`ve got it all here in this site haven`t you?

l have a watercolor(?) of two ladies, both blonde, in long gowns: on the left, a deep blue V-neck w/clutch bag; on the right, light blue front lace-up w/deep blue long cape.
Signed "Q. Crisp [printed, not cursive], A.P." On the left is also a yellowish vase w/pink blossoms; in between the ladies is a sort of chaise w/pink ruffle down the middle.
On the back brown paper of frame, "print signed by Quentin Crisp."
Does anyone have any information about this work?
Thanks!
Hi Victoire,
I am the webmaster of this site.
I`m sorry I don`t know of this, but I have actually been thinking of starting a new section of this site based on Quentin`s art work. I know that he was a more than competent artist, and worked in many art fields.
If you were happy to do so I would be very pleased to put an image of this painting on the site.
If so could you take a digital photo of it?
If I find anything out I shall let you know
Best regards.

I knew only a few stories about Quentin Crisp and then I saw Richard Louis James presentation in Berkeley, California.
What a wonderful piece of work!
Richard`s production places Quentin`s work and ideas in such an entertaining and reflective way as to put Quentin Crisp on the same plateau as the philosophers when it comes to the meaning of personal "style."
What a fine piece of work and a brilliant performance.

So thanks again.

It was with great sadness that I learned today of the death of Quentin`s old friend George Melly.
It was of he whom Quentin famously said "Mr Melly has to be obscene to be believed."
Britain has loft another of it`s great characters.
Rest in peace George.

I saw the show Tea `n` Crisp and thought Richard Louis James was wonderful.
After the show I heard some people talking about a great website about Quentin. I didn`t get a chance to speak to them, but I did a search and found this site.
I realised it was the right one when I saw Richard`s entry.
It is so great that people like Richard and you are doing so much to keep Quentin`s memory alive.

I had the premier of my show Tea `N Crisp tonight and one of the guests who was involved in a movie Red Ribbons with Quentin told me about your website.
I`m so thrilled to know it exists. I`m so blessed to continue his spirit on stage.
The response was unbelieveable. So many people were touched by his words and I`m proud to say the guest told me it was like watching Quentin`s ghost. I`m not surprised as I asked Quentin before going on to give me support and guidence tonight.
Bless you for this wonderfull site.

I was delighted to read of another play about Quentin. That makes four in total;
"The Naked Civil Servant", which stared Quentin`s "representative" on earth, that great actor John Hurt;
"Resident Alien" staring Bette Bourne;
"Quentin and I" staring David Leddick:
and now
"Tea`N`Crisp" staring Richard Louis James.
It is a relief to know that there are so many people who are still interested in Quentin.

Thanks Heather,
It has been wonderful the messages of support I have received.
They certainly have been a great source of encouragement.
In all the years I have been running this site, I have never received a single derogatory comment about it or Quentin.
If I had I would have posted them, as I`m sure Quentin would have wished me to, but none have been sent.
As for this individual, I have set a system in place so that his offensive links (which have nothing to do with either this site or Quentin) never reach the live site.
So if he is still out there with nothing better to do with his time then he has my sincere sympathy.
I hope at some point he finds something better to do with his life.

Hi Julie,
Yes, in 1949 he wrote two short plays which were broadcast on BBC radio.

Letting a Flat ? is about the life of a number of robots, including a policeman and a housemaid.

The Black Thing - is about a married man who is pursued by a black object which eventually drives him insane and he murders his wife.

I have not been able to find the scripts. Perhaps they still exist in the darkest regions of some BCC vault.
If I find them I will let you know.

Ray - well put.

To this end I have made the effort to ensure that it does not contain anything of an offensive nature, and was successful in achieving a `SafeSurf` rating for the site.
I welcome any comments of any kind which are genuine. However I would ask anyone wishing to contribute to please refrain from using offensive language or putting offensive links into this guest book.

Someone once told Mr Crisp that he was `a sorry, lonely, embittered old queen`, to which he replied `your absolutely right!` You can make a remark which is designed to be offensive without using overtly offensive words. Mr Crisp himself, to my knowledge never used offensive words, and never needed to.

Apparently Mr Crisp wrote some radio plays for the BCC during the late 1940s which were actually broadcast. Is this true and if so does anyone know if the scripts still survive?

Hi Ray, glad to see you still use my site.
You didn`t leave an email so I`m replying to you here.
Yes - quentincrisp.com used to be a separate site, but not for some time now. The guy who ran it announced he no longer had the time, so the domain was purchased by crisperanto.org. You will find that a lot of Quentin Crisp domain names now redirect to that site.
And yes again there used to be a site called quentincrispmuseum.com. I have only just recently found out that this site seems to no longer exist. Don`t know what happened. The guy who ran this was very nice. He encouraged me with my site and even sent me a present from his museum. A childrens comic book which Quentin illustrated.
I will try to find out what happened.
Yes his last book Dusty Answers. This is in the hands of the official site crisperanto.org, so the only thing I can say is to keep checking it. I have noticed that there are extracts from the book actually live on the site. Perhaps it will be published for Quentin`s centenary next year.
I don`t know where you live, but the site quentincrisp.co.uk is up for sale, if you or anyone else is interested.
N.B. I am hoping to launch a discussion forum on my site in the next couple of weeks as an experiment.

I browser your site regularly, but lately had started to wonder if you had lost interest in it. Nothing seemed to be happening. Glad to see you haven`t. There are so few about the great man, and we all need to do what we can to keep his memory alive. There used to be a site called quentincrisp.com (which now goes to crisperanto.org)and one called quentincrispmuseum.com, (which seems to have disappeared completely). Bye-the-bye, any sign of his last book coming out, is it going to happen at all? Seems like we`ve been waiting for years (probably because we have!) P.S. keep going.

It is unfortunate that Quentin is famous principally for being gay. The world should be remembering him more for his extradinary courage. His compassion for the human race. He was a unique philosopher. Even more so because he, unlike the other great philosophers, actually lived his own philosophy. I am not gay, but his philosophy, his humanity, his courage have influnced me in so many ways. I knew him for almost 10 years, unfortunately these were at the end of his long life. But I would not have exchaged that brief friendship with him for anything in the world. I shall always remember him. Thank you Quentin for everything

Quentin Crisp was "introcuced" to me by an english teacher when i was 15 years old.He was not really famous here where i live in Spain. In fact when i talk about him people looks at me in a funny way.I don´t care.During a time i held the wish that one day i could get to know him. That´s not possible now but you know what? I think we all Quentin´s fans are lucky cause now we share him. And i feel we are diferent but in a special way, in a rare and marvellous way. I guess if i could be able to live not like him, because that´s not possible, but with some courage like he did.A man can be a man in many ways, not just the traditional way. That´s the eassy one. Quentin was brave, not only a man, a person.I´m glad to see you all apreciate the same things, we could be few, but really good.

My grandmother and I met Quentin in 1980. I was quite young at the time. He asked if my mother was with me, or was our meeting "ammunition." I replied the latter, and he laughed and said "quite so." My grandmother and Quentin `hit it off` right away. I remember Quentin mentioned a "pretender to the throne," and took out a newspaper cutting, which I believe someone had sent him, and showed us a picture of a enigmatic young man in full makeup, and wearing an elaborate hat which I recall as much admired by Quentin and me and mother. The young man in question was unknown to most people at the time - but he was soon to become almost as notorious as Quentin himself. His name? Boy George.

Dear Quentin Crisp,
Your name still sounds in the air. I read your quotes and some of them reminded me of this piece I wrote. You said: "Life is what happens on the way to the grave." I connect to you by way of asking to the Dark Angel of Death. No one should be afraid of him, no one should be anxious, we will all get a turn to dance with him. This is my "Dark Angel Love". Dark Angel, Black Angel, come pour some darkness on me. Let your black wings be my cocoon, let dark wings rock me a while to sleep. Amnesiac let my new name be. Come open my gates, let the pretty horses run free. My armor has gotten too heavy, like my fishermans net, too much too long to drag thru the sea. A circle of rocks will protect us, my magic new lover and me, while we sleep under the roots of an orange tree. Unseen, we will wake and laugh and sing thru the leaves with the wind, we will bask in our secret love, our forbidden fruit will be right in the sun. We will run thru earthholes like earthdevils do, we will be giant earthworms that shake the earth and great Ogers castles too. I open my door and let the storm in. Dark angel, black angel, come dance, come pour your darkness on me.

How wonderful. What would the remarkable Mr Crisp have thought of such a tribute? Had he been alive and had this site been a knock at the door of his Lower East Side room it is quite certain he would have descended to the street and imparted thoughts and words of an illuminating kind.
And thats the thing. He really couldnt say no. Luckily that is why we all have a cornucopia of Crisp around us. It really isnt a question of keeping the notion of Mr Crisp alive. The Crisp empathiser has already been shot through with his extraordinary wit and process of mind. So the function of this fine site is surely to illuminate those who would tentatively approach the world of this fine man and be led to divine discovery.

Well I just visited your site and I found it to be very very nice. I especially like how you represent the other Quentin sites. Some people would not promote other sites but instead just try to shut down other sites in order to make their site the exclusive Quentin site...the absolute opposite of Quentins personality and philosophy. I found it very well done and naturally I will steer people to your site.

Mr.Crisp is one of the individuals throughout history to whom I can totally relate to, to quote the great man I have not spent my life hacking my way through the restraints of a bourgeois existence I was always free appallingly free. One of the things I learnt from the writings of Mr.Crisp is that when you realise how absurd everything and everyone is you stop being scared of life. Fellow Mr.Crisp acolytes please feel most free to email me.

I worked on Quentins one man show when he came to St. Louis. He was sweet and charming and called me a dear child - I was 45. He was a wonderful reality check for many of the audience, since he did not always say what they wanted to hear or what is currently politically popular but spoke as his own opinion and amusement dictated, which seems to be what freedom ought to be. I felt very lucky just to hang around and be part of the crew. And his advice on housekeeping has served me well.

I have just one more recollection from "An Evening With Question Crisp" at the Drill Hall in the late 'eighties. During the question and answer section an enquiry tried to make Quentin exclaim "Yes, Do!" like He did in the introduction to "The Naked Civil Servant." Quentin did not respond to this bait and merely dead panned the requested words. "Maybe it was the way I said it", he added as an after thought I wanted to put the above message in your guest book, however I experienced difficulties in transmission, so have e mailed this to your home address. I like what I have seen of Your web site. Do you know about a radio dramatisation that was performed by Bette Bourne on radio 4 last year? The original play was at Shepherds Bush, ironically at the same time Quentin died. I have a copy should you wish to have this. Yours Steve

I met Quentin Crisp only once , its quite boring but Ill tell You any way . At Quentins London ( Drill Hall Performance )in 1996 I thought it would be a huge scream to get Him to sign " How To Become a virgin " as a Happy birthday present for a female friend . He complied , but I remember He was writing the words the way I wanted them written, as a form of " Joke " . Now I am a little older I realise what a twit I was and what a gracious Man He was.

Anouncement :
The Quentin Crisp Museum, a for -Prophet Organization, has just launched its web site. The Quentin Crisp Museum is a large repository of rare materials pertaining to the life and work of our dear Mr. Crisp. Several years ago, it opened its doors as a play -museum for the amusement of Quentin and myself. Quentin gave me many items and some of these are now displayed at the Museum, alongside rare first editions and artworks which I have amassed from many sources. Please visit the Museum, but remember that only a fraction of our vast holdings is on display and the site is still under construction. We at the Quentin Crisp Museum believe that "maximum interest is at the point of maximum contrast." Indeed, Quentin lived by these words. Come and visit our site!
With all best wishes, Mr. Colaianni

Today I had a look at the newest Quentin Crisp site QuentinCrisp.info.. It pleases me greatly to see that this man still inspires people to do something to keep his memory alive. I am having high hopes for the 'last' book by Quentin DUSTY ANSWERS which is shortly to be published. I devoured his books one by one, but consider MANNERS FROM HEAVEN his finest work. Looking at the booklist I saw that ALL THIS AND BEVIN TOO, his book from 1943, was missing in the list. To my knowledge it is still available. And it is strangely entertaining. His death was a loss for all of us who liked him, but on the other hand I have a very content feeling as he was able to live for so long, be productive and lead in his old age a much more happier life then most of his life. It has been said over and over again how great his wit and wisdom was, but to me he was one of the shaper minds in the gay society, where superficiality usually rules. Looking at the movie-list in which he appeared I wonder if it would be a nice idea to add some STILLS from the films? Quentin also made other appearances like for instance in an ice-cream commercial. How about a list of these adventures? Perhaps his manager might have a list. It would be lovely to see some more pictures of Quentin on the site. To honor him, being an artist, I made two portraits of him which are to be seen on my site I never met Quentin personally, but corresponded with him about my portraits and received a signed photograph in return, which I of course treasure. My first encounter was THE NAKED CIVIL SERVANT TV-production and shortly after watching this gem I discovered his stage performance as double album in the library. I was crazy about this album, but not being able to obtain the record anywhere I... stole it. Okay, Quentin thought murder was the ultimate, but he had to do with theft in my case. I humbly confessed my sin to him. But I was tried to wiggle out of my crime by telling him that the library was able to obtain another copy and that all records within a few years were replaced by CDs. Alas his not included (although I read his performance IS somewhere available on CD.) I still cherish the album. To correct my crime I bought a lot of copies of MANNERS FROM HEAVEN to give to friends. They all loved the book. Now I am waiting for the publisher to print it again. These publishers seem to lack any commercial sense. A shame, as this deprives a lot of people of his sharp observations. Good luck with the homage site to Quentin Crisp. I love it.

Quentin had more courage than most. To have effectively "come out" in the 30s is testament to that. For my own part Im strictly heterosexual (whatever strictly means), but he remains one of my greatest heroes. He was incredibly funny, observant and caring. He had a way of turning peoples prejudices on themselves, leaving them to question their own beliefs. Heaven knows the world needs people of Quentins calibre. Greatly loved, greatly missed and never forgotten. And no, I never keep up with the Joness either - I too bring them down to my level! God bless you Quentin.

Max Miller said of himself "There will never be another one!" There will certainly never be another Quentin. Only a very select few are blessed with the gift to touch the hearts and reach the minds of others- Quentin had this rare gift in abundance. We must count ourselves fortunate that this unique human being lived in our time. We shall never see his like again. "So shines a good (life) in a naughty world"- I think the Bard himself would forgive me in such a worthy cause. Goodnight dear Quentin - you will always be remembered!
