I love America (1978)
If I asked myself what I originally wanted from a visit to America, I can now give no reply. The fulfillment has outstripped the expectation.
When not on stage, not being interviewed by straight television or the gay press, I was being lavishly entertained.
Almost until dawn generosity was lavished upon me as though I were a star. . . I was not only fed until I could hardly stand but transported by purring limousine to the homes of total strangers and returned by the same fashion to my hotel.
During the day I spent a certain amount of time sitting in my hotel room. Every now and again my solitude was beguilingly interrupted by telephone calls from journalists asking for my views on topics so general that even I was able to express an opinion about them.
'What do you think will happen in 1979?'
'Everything will get worse.'
'Marvelous. Thank you so much. Goodbye.'
